from Black Bear Orchards
High school sweethearts Brian and Rebekah Cox founded Black Bear Orchards in 2003, one
year after purchasing 35 acres of land in Palisade, CO. They weren't
the only ones with an interest in fresh fruit! Named for the black
bears that wander in for a snack, Black Bear Orchards has now
expanded to 100 acres of land with approximately 50,000 fruit
trees.
What makes Black Bear Orchards unique is their
dedication to sustainable farming practices. The orchard operates a
micro-sprinkler system on almost 100% of their land, greatly reducing
water consumption and runoff into the Colorado river. The soil is
maintained using pH balanced, natural acidic compost ensuring optimum
tree health. When it comes to their organic produce, Black Bear Orchards upholds all USDA
standards. For their conventional produce, they avoid the use of
chemically engineered pest control and use natural agents as much as
possible!
Not only does Black Bear Orchards have a
commitment to the environment and land on which they grow their
fruit, they are committed to providing a product that is the best in
the area! Their organic peaches are picked at "premium
ripeness" in order to ensure the best flavor. In order to do so,
they must handpick their entire orchard. You won't find any packing
lines at Black Bear Orchards. The fruit is taste tested daily and if
it doesn't make the cut, it isn't shipped to consumers!
Fruit harvest can only last so long, and when things slow down around
mid-October, the old orchards are cut down and prepared for the
following spring. That doesn't mean that the yummy flavors of
seasonal fruit have to end though. Black Bear Orchards suggests the use
of their fruit in jams, pies and tarts - preserving the sweet taste
of summer fruit all year long! A favorite snack of Black Bear
Orchards is created by dehydrating their peaches and
pears.
To keep up a diverse farming environment, Black Bear Orchards continually
researches what produce might make a good addition to the orchard,
while also matching what consumers ask for. With their
environmentally kind approach to farming and their incredibly fresh
fruit, Black Bear Orchards is a great choice when it comes to organic
peaches and conventionally grown pears!
