A Little Pumpkin Carving Fun

In North America, decorative pumpkins are carved into
jack-o'-lanterns in honor of Halloween. Those bred for this purpose
are usually meant to be very large, mostly hollow, and flat-bottomed.
Place a photo of your jack-o'-lantern on SOURCE Local Foods' Facebook
page between now and Halloween and be entered into a drawing for a
free Barbers' Thanksgiving Turkey!

What is
"SOURCE Shout-Out?"
In an effort to keep our customers connected to a community of
high-quality foods straight from the SOURCE, we will be bringing a
feature product, to the table, to share with you each week.
Whether this is a product that you already carry or something new to
consider, this allows us to share the stories behind the sustainable
products that we all love and enjoy. We invite you to share this
information among your retail/restaurant teams and with your customers,
so that together we can trace the path of where our food is coming
from. Thank you for playing such an integral role in our food
system.
May the SOURCE be with YOU!

Heirloom
Pumpkins
by Full Circle
Organic Farm
"We
believe growing the most wholesome produce organically, using
sustainable practices, is the highest calling to which a grower can
aspire. It is also our belief that people are the strongest link in
carrying out this lifelong endeavor with respect, dignity and
integrity. There exists a strong connection between humans, plants and
soil."
Dave Asbury,
owner of Full Circle Organic Farm
successfully does just that, sustainably farming 1,000 acres on leased
Boulder County Open Space in Longmont, CO. Ten farms make up the
acreage, each one uniquely different than the others. On this
farmland you will find over 70 varieties of vegetables as well as small
grains, grass hay and alfalfa. The hay and grain crops allow for
rotation to give the soil the needed rest from vegetable
production. In order to conserve and manage a variety of crops
with different needs, multiple types of irrigation are used, including
drip, pivot, solid set, and flood.
This fall
SOURCE Local Foods is proud to offer a bounty of pumpkins from which
Full Circle Organic Farm has grown and harvested. Whether it be
pumpkin pie, roasted pumpkin soup, pumpkin enchiladas - the vibrant
flesh of roasted pumpkin can be used in so many delicious, different
ways. Their unique shape and coloring make no two pumpkins alike.
Use these as a decorative accent in your restaurant and pull and roast
as needed. Below find a little more information on each:
Cinderella
Cinderella
Pumpkins are a unique French heirloom whose correct name is "Rouge
vif D'Etampes". The source of their nickname is in the resemblance
to the pumpkin that Cinderella's fairy godmother transformed into a
carriage. This pumpkin is recorded as having been the variety
cultivated by the Pilgrims and served at the second Thanksgiving
dinner.
Jarrahdale
Jarrahdale
pumpkins are native to Australia, whose strain has been preserved by
amateur seed savers. Their golden-yellow flesh is medium sweet,
string-less and is a very good quality for baking. It is desired for
fall decorating due to it's unusual slate-green color, deep ribs and
drum shape. The skin is quite hard, so use caution when cutting this
one open.
Pie Pumpkins

A classic traditional heirloom, pie pumpkins are fairly small and
dense, weighing only a few pounds. These pumpkins have a medium
or dark orange color. Their puréed flesh is most notably used in
desserts from pumpkin pie, pumpkin breads and cakes to pumpkin flan.
